Speaking of character, the chaplain of the US Senate has withdrawn his name as a speaker at the "Reclaiming America for Christ" conference in Florida this March. Apparently he feels that it is not appropriate for the Senate Chaplain to speak along side Republican propagandist Ann Coulter who has gone on record calling for the forcible conversion of Muslims to Christianity. Of all Christian groups, this should be most offensive to Baptists who have fought the hardest for freedom of religion and who understand that coerced religion is counterfeit religion.
So, who should present himself as a replacement speaker? Why, of course, Richard Land. It is unfortunate that the Senate Chaplain is more sensitive to Christian ethics than the SBC's ethical leader. Dr. Land needs encouragement from grass roots Baptists to disassociate himself from this conference.
Isn't it beautiful how God is a relational God and that even though he doesn't need us at all, He wants to be in a relationship with us? What peace and comfort we can take in knowing that God doesn't need us and what joy and love we have knowing that God desires us. And, just as He carves His name in our hearts, may we do the same as we carry His love to the world.
Great quote...love your postings...my spouse and I have been in ministry for 28 years. I guess I always thought that we Christians would become more civil over time.
I love this quote. I see the results of this thinking many times a year in all the volunteers we know that serve food in the name of our Lord to the homeless. Over the years, many have come to Christ.
I also know a FMB missionary who planted a church on the streets of a city of millions. He used plain white bread and the Gospel of Jesus Christ and now some of the starving homeless people have been saved. What character!! What a Saviour!
Another thought, I wish they would ask me to speak at the "Reclaiming America" conference. I don't care who else was there, if I get a mic and a chance to preach of my Saviour, I will always do it.
Scripture says, "some preach for sordid gain, and some preach for the love of Christ, neverthless, I rejoice, Christ has been preached!"

Wade: To Spurgeon's intent, I applaud. But many a person has carved out the Gospel on headstones of marble in cemeteries around the world. The character of faithful Christians can continue to witness of their Lord on their headstones long after they've gone to be with the Lord. That is the case of my son's. Folks who lose loved ones and bury them in cemeteries are often seen roaming about reading other headstones. I'm planning to add a granite bench on the extra plot I bought next to my son. On it will be multiple verses. Just thought I'd add this to the wonderful quote of Spurgeon's.

First Point. It was (after all) the “Reclaiming America for Christ.” It begs the question, was it about politics, Christianity, Muslim, or political correctness?
2nd. It says ‘CHRISTIAN”
3rd. If he is a Christian Chaplain, then who is he serving?
4th. Ann Coulter can be sharp around the edges but has yet to loose a debate with any liberal.
5th. She is right about WW2
6th Christ said, go and make disciples, (uh-hm) that would be CHRISTIANS
7th. BAPTIST DID NOT FIGHT FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION BUT FREEDOM TO PRACTICE CHRISTIANITY.
8th Dr Land preaches Jesus
9th The last time I checked, it wasn’t a sin to be a Republican, a Democrat, a liberal or a Conservative.
10th. If a person is a Christian (only God knows) then what does it really say of character if that person is to worried about political correctness or their job to lift up Jesus at every opportunity?
11th I may not agree with every point of doctrine of Dr Land, but HE IS NOT AFRAID OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS AND HE WILL STAND AND PREACH JESUS .
12TH There is a difference in Christian character, Religious Character and political correctness.
13th I thank God that Dr Land had the character to stand for Jesus when others wouldn’t.

Virginia Baptists joined George Mason in advocating for the development of our Bill of Rights. It was no accident that the US Constitution made no reference to Christianity and only one reference to religion (there shall be no religious test for holding public office). It was also no accident that the very first amendment to that constitution expressly granted two rights related to religion. Whether both the establishment clause and the free exercise clause were both needed was hotly debated at the time, and Virginia Baptists were among those who fought hardest for these protections. It was indeed intentional that the freedom granted is to practice any religion, rather than the freedom to practice Christianity.
Steve A.,
It isn't clear to me, but it seems that you agree with Coulter's premise that we (the US) should seek revenge for the wrong done to us on Sept. 11, 2001. I don't see a Biblical justification for such thinking.
SINCE THE ORIGINAL PURPOSE WAS CHRISTIANITY,(see below) SEE HOW CLEVER SATAN WAS TO GET IT CHANGED IN SOME STATES. HOWEVER, THE VAST MAJORITY OF STATES GAVE HONOR TO GOD IN THEIR CONSTITUTIONS.
THIS IS REALLY ALL I HAVE TO SAY ON IT. WE WERE BIRTHED AS A CHRISTIAN NATION AND EVER SINCE THEN GROUPS HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THAT BIRTH, USUALLY BY SECULAR COURTS AND BY "RELIGIOUS" PEOPLE.
The Maylower Compact

Your admiration for Ann Coulter is puzzling from a Baptist point of view. She espouses an extreme form of civil religion that has nothing to do with real Christianity. A person who accuses the 9/11 widows, who dared to speak out against the war in Iraq, of being unworthy wives whose husbands were probably in the process of divorcing them before they were killed, is not a person who exhibits Christian behavior. It was cruel in the extreme and unworthy of anyone who calls themself a Christian. Southern Baptists are increasingly meeting skepticism in the eyes of the public to the point of causing many new churches to omit "Baptist" from their names. The last thing that Southern Baptists need is one more instance in which its leadership appears at a forum where such hateful rhetoric is likely to be spouted by the likes of Ann Coulter.
"You seem to agree with coulter that we should seek revenge for the attack of 9-11. I don't see Biblical justification" ------------------------- This is not really the issue or a proper argument. If we had not gone to war with Germany, you and I would be speaking German and we would not be using this blog. We did not go to this going on now war for revenge but for safety.
Suppose someone was sitting outside your yard and shooting at you wife, children, mother etc or raping your friends for 30 years, at what point would you stand up and defend your family and friends? THE BIBLE SAYS, “IF A MAN WILL NOT TAKE CARE OF THOSE OF HIS OWN HOUSE HE IS WORSE THAN AN INFIDEL AND HAS DENIED HIS FAITH.” Something to ponder on
Americans have been attacked for more than 30 years. Some of those behind the attacks have declared war on America. I have family there in the war and have a church member there. They both joined to help PROTECT OUR FREEDOMS, OUR RIGHTS TO BE CHRISTIANS, AND OUR FAMILIES.
I have counseled with a man for over 30 years who was one of the soldiers who found the KILLING FIELDS in CAMBODIA. He had photos of body parts 4 feet deep for about a square mile. If you haven’t seen the movie, you should. HOWEVER, REAL LIFE WAS A LOT WORSE. TYRANTS DID THAT.
I hate war and have lost a lot of friends and family to war. However, your mention of Bible justification is weak. You can never argue from silence. I don’t find church buildings, cars, electricity, air conditioning etc, we can go on forever. There is no Bible justification to use them either but we all do.
On the other hand, GOD IS A WARRIOR GOD. Throughout the Old Testament God himself order his armies on earth to slaughter men, women, children, and livestock.

I am old but I will fight to protect MY FAMILY, And this great CHRISTIAN NATION.
I forgot to mention that I think Ann Coulter is over the top and out of line with a lot of her remarks. My post was answering the question of speaking at the “Christ for America” and the question as pertaining to the necessity of a defense of our precious liberties.
I have taken to much of Wades space, I now step down from the soapbox and fold the flag! (After I salute :-).....................)
Just as I pay taxes, I have to hope our gov't will protect itself in this temporary world we live in until true peace arrives that fateful day when death dies.
At what ever time our nation acts to obliterate any who attack her, she will have my support, and if there is a need for obese nearsighted warriors, I haven't given up the hope of being of use to Uncle Sam. Hoo-ah!
Miss Coulter watched as the "9/11 widows" became prominent, probably passively, for all I know. Then, she saw certain of them take on the role of political commentators, using the prominence our media had bestowed on them.
At that point Miss Coulter reacted as any political opponent of the widows' political direction had a right to do so. Did she speak out too strongly in one or more areas? Probably; I don't know; you tell me. Is she human? Was she as on-the-spot out-of-line as Peter on those days Jesus had to call him down? She can certainly say things too strongly for some ears.
As much of the American populace there are who agree with the basic direction of Miss Coulter's political musings, I fear not for the Catholics, Baptists, or other groups whose members are seen to applaud her, or who find her too much to take.
I don't feel the need to shout about it, but you seem to have put words in my mouth. I said that I don't see Biblical justification for seeking revenge. Your response seems to be about protection of life and property. I see that as two different things. The US did not go to war with Germany to seek revenge, but to protect those in need of safety. While I can agree to disagree with you about how unsafe we would be had we not gone to war subsequent to the 9/11 attacks (vs how safe we are now, having gone to war), that is not the argument I presented.
Further, I hardly think the Bible is silent on the issue. Love your neighbor, turn the other cheek, vengeance is mine, says the Lord--all of these seem to speak to the issue of revenge, which is the issue to which I referred.
I continue to disagree with your premise about ours being a Christian nation. Our nation was founded by people escaping persecution from Christian nations. Our founding fathers (and mothers for that matter) were, by and large, deists. So yes, it made sense that they gave honor to God. Again, if you read the primary documents that show us the arguments as they were presented at the time our nation was founded, you'll see that it was not an accident that we are protected from religious tests for public office, the establishment of a state religion, and that the right to free expression of religious beliefs is protected.
As my final thoughts on this blog page,"Carve your name on Hearts". I will let God's Holy Word speak for me. It is amazing to me how much of this verse I see in people every day. Especially those who are really good at twisting and turning the realities of His Ways.
I will continue to speak on other pages and I will continue to lift up God, the Lord Jesus Christ and this great nation that God has blessed. It is the largest Christian nation the world has ever known and it is our Creator who is in control.
As I ask Him to "Carve His Name" on my heart, I pray for those who's folly blinds them to His truths and pray that they will let Him "Carve His Name"
He is in total control.

Dona nobit pacem; grant us peace!

Peace to ALL
As my final thoughts on this blog page,"Carve your name on Hearts".
