An Intellectual Defense for the Use of Horns Down

Horns Down
By now most people have heard that Big 12 officials will penalize any Oklahoma Sooner player who flashes the "horns down" hand sign during the 2018 Big 12 Championship in Arlington, Texas.

Unfortunately, many will assume that this ban of the "horns down" is a promotion of good sportsmanship, and they will never consider the implications of banning a gesture that has significant intellectual and religious meaning. As you'll read in this short essay, if there is a symbol that should be "banned" during the Big 12 Championship, it is the "horns up" symbol, otherwise known as "Hook'em Horns."

Allow me to explain.

Horns Up
The traditional Texas Longhorn hand sign of the pinkie and index finger pointing up, called "the sign of the upright horns, is also known as "devil horns," "metal horns," or "rock horns."

The "Hook'em Horns" symbol has a long history in eastern religions as well as western "rock and roll" music. When someone flashes "horns up," it symbolizes cuckoldry. The common words for cuckoldry in Italian, Greek and Spanish are cornuto, κερατάς (keratas) and cornudo respectively. All three words literally mean "horned."

Do you know what a cuckold is? A cuckold is the husband of an adulterous wife. The term is applied to males who are unwittingly investing parental effort in offspring that are not genetically their own. The word cuckold is derived from the cuckoo bird and alludes to the cuckoo's habit of laying its eggs in another's nest. In time, the rightful owner of the nest will recognize that the cuckoo birds he's raising are not his own. They don't belong.

The sign of "the upright horns," is "the cuckhold (horn) symbol" and conveys that one is taking for himself what is not rightfully his to possess.

So when someone flashes the "horns down" gesture, it means just the reverse. The "upside down horns" is a symbol that refers to  "the reversing the curse" or to "the warding off of cuckoldry." It is the modern equivalent of "knocking on wood" to prevent malevolency in one's life.

Warding Off the Spirit of Cuckoldry
In Italy and other parts of the Mediterranean, the "horns down" gesture is the most powerful symbol designed to keep at bay evil spirits.

There are other gestures in those cultures that supposedly keep someone from bad luck, like "touching iron" (tocca ferro), touching one's nose, or grabbing one's testicles. But the "horns down" symbol remains, to this day, the most powerful and least offensive gesture for warding off the spirit of cuckoldry in many countries.

Big 12 officials, I suggest you do a little homework before you penalize a player from Oklahoma.  The "horns down" symbol of the Oklahoma Sooners is definitively more appropriate than the "horns up" symbol of the Texas Longhorns.

When a player flashes and waves "horns up," he is calling the other players cuckolds; stupid, naive players who have no clue that there's illegitimacy in their house, and they (the "horns up" signalers) are the ones responsible for the illegitimacy.

But when a player lashes "horns down," that person is "warding off" the spirit of cuckoldry, making it known that only those who truly belong will be allowed in the house.

The "horns up" symbol should be banned. The "horns down" symbol should be approved.

"Horns down" is how Oklahoma players will ward off the illegitimate cuckoldry spirit of the Texas Longhorns who are trying to lay their eggs in the wrong house.

There's only ONE Oklahoma!

Perhaps players of both teams should make rude gestures to the stands to let the taxpayers just what they are getting.

Wade,

From the op:

"There is only ONE Oklahoma"

… and there is only ONE Texas,
… and thank God there are not more of either one!

It seems to me that your brain turns to mush during a Red River rivalry game, but good luck to your guys tomorrow. Don't mess it up like you did the last game.

Thank you. I’ve never liked the Hook em Horns sign. Wasn’t sure why. Now I know.

Wade,

Don’t want to brag :)

But my grandson’s a senior in High School and made All District in football on offence and defense.

I cheer both teams if that is possible? Heck most the players that play for OK and UT are from the state of Texas. So I love the University of Texas at Norman and the one in Austin. :) Go Texas football !

ANON,

Then there is the fact that the field that the Longhorns play their home games on is named after an Oklahoma boy who taught those Texas kids all they know about football and is rightly called the Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium.

BOOMER SOONER BABY!!

Good reply, Paul. I miss your comments.

Paul, That is great. I loved DR even if he was from OK. Maybe even more so cause I think it shows the wisdom of Darrell Royal who had enough sense to come to Texas where he won several national championships and has a field named after him. We do take immigrants who are willing to commit to Texas for the long haul and learn the language. You may be saying the same about Texans Lincoln Riley, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray , ....... in the future cause we have revoked their citizenship. Just picking a little in fun, don't take it too serious :)

Interesting comments about Darrell Royal. He was from Hollis, Ok which is in far southwest Oklahoma. When Oklahoma became a state in 1907 they used a different fork of the red river as the border and what had been Greer county in Texas became Greer, Jackson and Harmon counties in Oklahoma. Hollis is in Harmon county. I grew up in Greer county and many of my friends south of the border have tried to tell me I was deprived of being a Texan. I’m quite happy being an Oklahoman.
Just a little tidbit of history regarding Texas and Oklahoma.
Oh, by the way, great win for the Sooners today. Congratulations from an OSU Cowboy.

It is also interesting how the Sooner name came to be.

Can't trust those guys... still.

Martyrdom of James, Brother of the Lord
Church History — Eusebius Pamphilius
Hegesippus, who lived immediately after the apostles, gives the most accurate account in the fifth book of his Memoirs. He writes as follows:
1. "James, the brother of the Lord, succeeded to the government of the Church. He has been called the Just by all from the time of our Savior to the present day.
2. He was holy from his mother’s womb; and he drank no wine nor strong drink, nor did he eat any flesh. His hair was never cut.
3. He alone was permitted to enter into the holy place; for he wore not woolen but linen garments. And he was in the habit of entering alone into the temple, and was frequently found upon his knees begging forgiveness for the people, so that his knees became hard like those of a camel.
4. Because of his great justice he was called the Just, Bulwark of the people.
5. When many of the rulers believed, there was a commotion among the Scribes and Pharisees who said there was danger that all the people would be looking for Jesus as the Christ. Coming to James they said, “We entreat thee, restrain the people; for they are gone astray in regard to Jesus, as if he were the Christ. We entreat thee to persuade all that come to the feast of the Passover that Jesus is not the Christ; for we all have confidence in thee. For we bear witness, as do all the people, that thou art just, and dost not respect persons.”
6. “Therefore persuade the multitude not to be led astray concerning Jesus. For the people, and all of us also, have confidence in thee. Stand therefore upon the pinnacle of the temple, that from that high position thou mayest be clearly seen, and thy words may be readily heard by all the people. For all the tribes, and the Gentiles also, are come together on account of the Passover.
7. The Scribes and Pharisees placed James upon the pinnacle of the temple, and cried out to him: “Thou just one, in whom we all ought to have confidence, forasmuch as the people are led astray after Jesus, the crucified one, declare to us, who is Jesus?”
8. And he answered with a loud voice, “Why do ye ask me concerning Jesus, the Son of Man? He himself sitteth in heaven at the right hand of God, and is about to come upon the clouds of heaven.”
9. Many were fully convinced and gloried in the testimony of James, and said, “Hosanna to the Son of David.” The Scribes and Pharisees said to one another, “We have done badly in supplying such testimony to Jesus.” They cried out, saying, “Oh! Oh! The just man is also in error.” They went up and threw down the just man, and said to each other, “Let us stone James the Just.” And they began to stone him, for he was not killed by the fall; but he turned and knelt down and said, “I entreat thee, Lord God our Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

10. And one of them, who was a fuller, took the club with which he beat out clothes and
struck the just man on the head. And thus, he suffered martyrdom. And they buried him on the spot, by the temple, and his monument still remains by the temple. He became a true witness, both to Jews and Greeks, that Jesus is the Christ.
11. These things are related at length by Hegesippus, who is in agreement with Clement. “James was so admirable a man and so celebrated among all for his justice, that the more sensible of the Jews were of the opinion that this was the cause of the siege of Jerusalem, which happened to them immediately after his martyrdom for no other reason than their daring act against him.”
12. Josephus, has testify this in his writings: "These things happened to the Jews to avenge James the Just, who was a brother of Jesus, that is called Christ. For the Jews slew him, although he was a most just man."
These twelve statements were written to show how respected James was. Bible writers indicate his importance when naming people, he is mentioned first: “James, Peter, and John, who were known as pillars of the church…” (Galatians 2:9)
After an angel rescued Peter from prison, he could have said, ‘tell the brothers what happened, but he said, “Tell James and the other brothers what happened.” (Acts 12:17)
Why did Jewish leaders hate Paul?
Paul was in Jerusalem ten years studying Torah under Gamaliel to be a Pharisee. “…I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors!” (Acts 23:6) No one is hated more than a traitor. “Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned.” (Acts 11:24-25)

Paul went to Jerusalem even though he was warned
“…These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that Paul should not go to Jerusalem.” (Acts 21:4) “The Holy Spirit declares; the owner of this belt will be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.” (Acts 21:11)
Paul was determined to go because he had collected a lot of money: “I must go to Jerusalem to take a gift to the believers there.” (Romans 15:25) “They gave not only what they could afford, but far more…to believers in Jerusalem.” (2 Corinthians 8:3-4)

Paul was Told his Life is in Danger
Paul arrived in Jerusalem. “The next day Paul went with us to meet with James and all the elders of the Jerusalem church.” (Acts 21:18) This must have been when Paul gave the gift from the Christian Gentiles because “Paul went to the Temple the next day with the other men.” (Acts 21:26) Probably James was the spokesman for the elders in saying: “…You know dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed, and they all follow the law of Moses very seriously. But the Jewish believers here in Jerusalem have been told that you are teaching all the Jews…to turn their backs on the laws of Moses. They’ve heard that you teach them not to circumcise their children or
2
follow the Jewish customs. What should we do? They will certainly hear that you have
come.” (Acts 21:20-22) “Here’s what we want you to do. We have four men…Go with them to the Temple and join them in the purification ceremony [took seven days], paying for them to have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that the rumors are false and that you yourself observe the Jewish laws.” (Acts 21:23-24)

How did “WE” present the problem and solve it so fast?
They learned Paul was in town and had one day to make a plan. Paul was not the only one with a problem. If their Jewish Christians killed Paul, Gentile Christians would revolt because Paul was their hero. BUT if Jewish leaders got Paul out of their hair, they wouldn’t be blamed. In fact, they could tell Gentiles that Paul believed in the Law because he was taking a Jewish purification ceremony when he was captured.

“WE” wanted Christian Gentiles to follow Jewish laws
1. “What magician has hypnotized you?... you used to see the meaning of Christ’s
death…did you receive the Holy Spirit by trying to keep the Jewish laws?... No, only
after you trusted Christ to save you…have you gone crazy?” (Galatians 3:1-3)
2. “…If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.” (Galatians1:9)
3. “My message comes from Jesus Christ who told me what to say.” (Galatians 1:12)
4. “…They wanted to enslave us and force us to follow their Jewish regulations.”
(Galatians 2:4)
5. “…when some friends of James came, Peter wouldn’t eat with the Gentiles anymore.
He was afraid of criticism from these people who insisted of the necessity of
circumcision.” (Galatians 2:12)
6. “…you are following a different ‘way to heaven’ that doesn’t go to heaven at all.
(Galatians 1:6)
7. “Now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.”
(Galatians 3:25)
8. “Those false teachers…” (Galatians 4:17)
9. “Who’s interfered with you to keep you from the truth? It isn’t God.” (Galatians 5:7-8)
10. “It takes only one wrong person to infect all the others.” (Galatians 5:9)
11. Paul didn’t agree with James’s church being, “…zealous of the law.” (Acts 21:20)
12. “But didn’t Abraham earn his right to heaven by all the good things he did? No, for
being saved is a gift.” (Romans 4:4)
13. “…He died to annul the whole system of Jewish laws.” (Ephesians 2:15)
14. “The foolishness of trying to be save by being good…” (Hebrews 6:1)
15. Paul believed, “All our righteousness are as filthy rags…” (Isaiah 64:6)

If breaking the Law of Moses in the Old Testament meant death, how much worse punishment would Jewish Christians believe Paul deserve for preaching against the Law? Can you see Paul is fooled in thinking this group by calling him “dear brother" and “What should we do” had his best interest at heart? After all, he had just given them a great amount of money to help the Jewish Christians.

Paul took their advice and everything went well because Jewish leaders didn’t recognize Paul with his head shaved. Can you imagine the panic that “WE” was having as six days went by? “The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in the Temple and roused a mob against him…” (Acts 1:27)

Let’s name these Jews XX, and explore the possibilities how they recognized Paul but the Jewish leaders couldn’t even though they had seen him for years, whipped him five times, beat him with rods three times, and stoned him until they thought he was dead.
1. XX arrived on the seventh day and recognized him.
2. XX was there many days and recognized him the seventh day.
3. XX was told by someone the identity of Paul. ‘Tell someone that won’t recognize you.’
Paul’s Trial before Felix kept Him in Prison
“Ananias, the high priest, arrived with some of the Jewish elders and the lawyer, Tertullus, to present their case against Paul to the governor…We have found this man to be a trouble maker who is constantly stirring up riots among the Jews. He is a ringleader of the cult known as the Nazarenes. Furthermore, he was trying to desecrate the Temple when we arrested him…other Jews chimed in, declaring that everything Tertullus said was true.” (Acts 24:1-9)
“…because Felix wanted to gain favor with the Jewish people, he left Paul in prison.” (Acts 24:27)
James could have told Felix, Paul went to the Temple as we suggested for him to fulfill a Jewish purification vow. He was not desecrating the Temple, nor does he stir up riots. He came with a gift of money from other Christians to help us survive this famine.

If he had done that, Felix would have set Paul free.
But James didn’t attend the trial, and as the years went by with no letters or visits from the ones that called him, “dear brother”, Paul knew he had been tricked. That’s why he wrote 2 Timothy 4:16, “At my first answer no man stood for me…I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.” This was the same prayer that Paul heard Stephen pray. Had the same crime been done?

I believe

When we meet Paul and James in heaven, we will recognize them: “…I shall know even as also I am known.” (1 Corinthians 13:12 KJ) “…I will know fully, as I am fully known.” (Holman)

No one will remember ‘ANY BAD’ that has happened to them or anyone else because “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more…sorrow, nor crying…” (Revelations 21:4 KJ)

A Christian ‘victim’ will not know they were murdered, and a Christian murderer will not know what they did. Also we will not grieve if any friend or relative is not there. It will be like they were never born.

Hank Fritsch, THANKS.

The link below tells why Martin Luther was wrong in saying the Book of James was a book of straw.

https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-gospel-of-james

Yesterday, I found a sheet of paper I’d written 22 years ago. That was before I knew Luther’s view of James. The paper had a picture of the CROSS with a dagger stuck in it and the handle had EXCEPT.

That picture came from reading:

“And so my judgment is that we should not insist that the Gentiles who turn to God must obey our Jewish laws, EXCEPT that we should write to them to refrain from eating meat sacrificed to idols, from all fornication, and also from eating unbled meat of strangled animals. FOR these things have been preached against in Jewish synagogues in every city on every Sabbath for many generations.” (Acts 19-21 Living Bible)

If I told someone, ‘The river is shallow, EXCEPT some is deep’, the EXCEPT cancels the river being shallow.

Also, James’ reason was based on TRADITION.

My paper had: “God gave Jews the law as life jackets until He gave His Son. Christian Jews believed life jackets still kept them safe and insisted Gentiles wear them.

Jon Estes- Prior to 1908, the nickname for the University of Oklahoma football team was the "Boomers", after the Land Run settlers who legitimately participated. In 1907, there was an enthusiastic pep club that began showing up early to every game. They were called the "Sooner Rooters" because they showed up early and energetically cheered for the team. (By this time, the term "Sooner" had come to mean someone who shows up early and works hard.) In 1908, the football team took the nickname "Sooners" NAMED AFTER THEIR FANS and most loyal supporters. The OU Sooners are the only team named after their fans.
