Christ Fulfilled the Law, So Stop Trusting In Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-20).

The Law and the Prophets.

Everything in the Old Testament is either called Law (the Pentateuch) or the Prophets (the rest of the writings of the Old Testament).

If you have a hard time understanding how the Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures are called by Jesus "the Law and the Prophets," I point out what the premiere Hebrew writer of the New Testament declared in his writing to the Hebrews:
"God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, has in these last days spoken to us in His Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2 NAS).
The last days referred to by the writer of Hebrews are the last days of Hebrew Temple worship (AD 30 to AD 70) and not the last days of the world.

"Christ is the end of the law for everyone who believes" (Romans 10:4).

The brilliant beauty of the Person and work of Jesus Christ is seen more clearly through understanding Jesus' - and our - proper relation to the Old Testament.

Jesus is called the Word of God incarnate (John 1:14), which means "God's Word took on flesh."

Acoute auton! (Greek: "Hear Him!")

Listen to Jesus. Hear God.

This is why the writer of Hebrews states that Jesus is the sum and consummated substance - God's final Word -  to this world.

That means, if you look to the Law or the Prophets (eg. "the Old Testament") for your view of how to operate and run your church, your family, your business, or your life, then you will find yourself with the same problem the scribes and the Pharisees had in Jesus' day. They made their living based on following the Law, but they miserably failed in life, covering it all up by their self-righteousness and judgmental attitude toward others.

Jesus Christ and obeying HIS WORDS are your only hope of living a fulfilling life.

Here's why.

1. All the Old Testament writings - not some, but all - are about the Person of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, "Moses wrote of Me" (John 5:46)

"If you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.” (John 5:46)

If you are going to believe the writings of Moses, then you are must believe in Christ and listen to Him. You begin by trusting Him for your righteousness before God, and not your obedience to any Law (Philippians 3:7-11).

Then you read and do what Jesus said (Matthew 7:24).

2. The Old Testament Scriptures are only understood correctly when the believer looks to Jesus Christ and the work that HE has accomplished in FULFILLING the Law.

“The meaning of all the Scriptures is unlocked by the death and resurrection of Jesus” (Graeme Goldsworthy, Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture, 54).

3. When Jesus taught others the Old Testament, He taught them of Himself.

"And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself." (Luke 24:27)

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (Matthew 5:17–18)

4. "Heaven and earth" is the Old Testament way of describing the conditional covenant God made with Israel, choosing Israel out of all the nations of the world through whom God would reveal His Word.

When God called the Hebrews as His own people He said, "I have put My words in your mouth and have covered you with the shadow of My hand to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say, 'You are My people'" (Isaiah 51:16). Throughout the Old Testament, Israel is called "heaven and earth."

God gave Israel the Law and He "shook the earth," that is He shook the people of Israel. The writer of Hebrews says, "His voice shook the earth then (Mt. Sinai) ..." (Hebrews 12:26). The Hebrews heard God speak at Sinai and they trembled. His voice (the Law) was holiness and pure justice.

God spoke to Israel in the Old Testament and He spoke to heaven and earth. "Give ear, O heavens, and let me speak; let the earth hear the words of my mouth" (Deuteronomy 32:1). "Listen, O heavens, and hear, O earth; For the Lord speaks, 'Sons have I reared and brought up, but they have revolted against Me'" (Isaiah 1:2).

5. The Law and the Prophets are perfectly fulfilled in the Person and work of Jesus Christ, so "the heavens and earth" have passed away, but the words of Christ remain.

The Old has gone. The New has come.

Throughout the Old Testament, the Prophets said that God's covenant with Israel would one day be replaced with God's new agreement with all the nations of the world.  God's covenant with Israel (found in the Law and the Prophets) revolved around the Temple, the Temple rituals, the Temple sacrifices, and the Temple priesthood.

This Temple of the Covenant was in Jerusalem. Do you remember how Jesus prophesied the Temple's destruction? (Look at Matthew 24:1-3). Jesus predicts the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in a generation. The prophecy of Jesus came to pass in A.D. 70.

Heaven and earth passed away. God's covenant with Israel came to an end.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away," said Christ (Matthew 24:35).

The great theologian John Owen (AD 1616-1683) writes in his commentary on II Peter 3:13 about the "new heavens and earth" that God creates after the destruction of the old "heavens and earth"
"I affirm that the heavens and earth here intended in this prophecy of Peter, the coming of the Lord, the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men, mentioned in the destruction of that heaven and earth, do all of them relate, not to the last and final judgment of the world, but to that utter desolation and destruction that was to be made of the Judaical church and state."
The reasons Owen gives that the destruction of the Old Covenant Temple worship is the destruction of "heavens and earth" and the gospel age is the age of the "new heavens in earth" are then given:
    1. Because whatever is here mentioned was to have its peculiar influence on the men of that generation, and
    2. Peter tells them, that after the destruction and judgment that he speaks of (vers. 7-13), ” We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth,’ etc. They had this expectation. But what is that promise? Where may we find it? Why, we have it in the very words and letter, Isa. lxv. 17. Now, when shall this be that God shall create these new heavens and new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness? Saith Peter, ” It shall be after the coming of the Lord, after that judgment and destruction of ungodly men, who obey not the gospel, that I foretell.” But now it is evident from this place of Isaiah 66:21-22 that this is a prophecy of Gospel times only; and that the planting of these new heavens is nothing but the creation of Gospel ordinances to endure forever. The same thing is so expressed Hebrews 12:26-28.
6. The Person of Moses was the Lawgiver of the Old Covenant, but Christ is the ultimate and Supreme Lawgiver, far superior to Moses.

The Royal Law Jesus gives is "Love one another as I have loved you." (John 13:34).

If it is objected that the Royal Law is "Love your neighbor as you love yourself" (James 2:8), I respond:

"You can't love yourself until you comprehend God's love for you in Jesus Christ; for self-love is only eternal when based on the acceptance and comprehension of the eternal love of God (Jeremiah 31:3). Only when you comprehend His love can you love others in the manner He loves you and in the fullness of the love you have for yourself."

I find it an axiom of human behavior that self-love without the love of God is self-destructive.

But the love of God transforms.

You can't murder if you don't hate your enemies.
You can't steal if you're only interested in giving.
You can't slander others when you speak words of grace.
You can't commit adultery when you love your wife like Christ loves you.

And on, and on, and on.

There's no 'relaxing'  of any moral code in the New Agreement. The righteousness of Christ's people far exceeds that of the Pharisees.

Yet, no believer in Jesus Christ is looking to his or her obedience to any law for God's blessings.

No. We look to Christ, who fulfilled the Law in our stead.

"For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory" (2 Corinthians 1:20).

"Yes," says God, "to everything that is good for you."  No conditions. Or rather, all the conditions of God's mercies, benevolent providence, and daily grace are met in Christ.

7. The establishment of state government is never the Kingdom of God; for God's Kingdom is seen through His reign (the King's dominion) in the hearts of His people.

Christ's Kingdom transcends national, political, and geographical boundaries.

Yes, we are called to obey government authorities, but state government is not the Kingdom of Christ.
The state is grounded in God, but it is never expressive of Christ's immediate rule.

Romans 13:1, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”

John 18:36, “My [Jesus’s] kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting.”

Application:

1. If you look to Old Testament Law for your righteousness, you will never rest in the gift of Christ's righteousness which God gives you by faith in Jesus Christ.
2. The Old Testament Law and Prophets focused on external obedience, but faith in Christ during this Kingdom gospel age will circumcise (cut and change) the heart of a sinner.
3. The believer in Christ won't murder because the believer doesn't hate his enemies, slander his friends, or live in an attitude of contempt. Likewise, every moral commandment in the Old Testament is far superceded by the internal work of Christ's grace in His people during this Kingdom age.
 4. Since "the last days" mentioned in Scripture are the last days of Temple worship, all external forms of worship that miss what it means to worship Christ "in spirit and in truth" will lead you back to bondage to the law, be it Mosaic law, church law, or priestly law.
5. You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free.

Postscript: Ladies, if you are kept in bondage by the teaching of "the inherent authority of males," or if you are stifled in serving the Kingdom through your Spirit-giftings by church leaders who focus on Law, then I would suggest you find a place where Christ is held supreme, and the only authority for the church is His final and ultimate Word which endures forever.

Hear Him!

I see things differently.

Law and Prophets should be translated as Torah and Prophets as this identifies by name the first 2 parts of the Tanach, the 3rd part is the Writings. But in this case, Torah and Prophets is acting as a synecdoche for the Tanach. So it means the OT as you say, but I get there via a different chain of reasoning.

Heaven and Earth is also a synecdoche for Heavens, Earth, and Underworld, a Jewish was of referring to all Creation. All Creation passes away with the New Creation at the end of Rev. Heaven and Earth did not pass away with the destruction of the temple, the temple and the temple service then became unable to be performed. Since one can only perform a temple service in a properly processed temple according to Torah, it is actually keeping Torah to not have any services when the temple is in such a state.

Rom 10:4 uses the Greek word telos which is better translated as goal. It does not mean the end of Scripture as ending existence or purpose, it means that the Scripture of the time of Jesus (the Tanach/OT) was pointing to Jesus as the goal.

Fulfill Scripture does not mean abolish or end, it means to correctly interpret Scripture, this was a Jewish idiom that is found in the Jewish mishnah.

Of course, Christ is superior to Moses, this does not mean the OT goes away. Paul referred to the OT in 2 Tim 3:16-17. One reason the OT exists is to define sin and help us see our need for Jesus as Savior.

State government can never properly represent the Kingdom of God.

Wade, I’ve noticed that there is a wide variety of beliefs in the Christian community on how to ‘keep the sabbath”. What’s you take on it? Thanks ......

Wade Burleson said...

David,

I believe there are no "holy" days, new moon festivals, or Sabbaths in the New Covenant.

Christ is our Shabbat, so every day is a "day of rest" in Him.

Wade, just a small editing correction. Point 3. is missing in the list, or rather, the "3" was omitted along with the bolding of the text. I assume that the words are there but that the "3" and bolding were overlooked.

If editing is required and is done then this comment can be deleted as it will no longer be required.

Was thinking about the idea of 'sanctuary' and the Temple and of Our Lord, Who replaced the Temple as 'sanctuary':

In the beautiful and ancient 'Song of Moses' how strangely the fulfillment of Our Lord as 'sanctuary' is foretold:

"10 He found them in a desert land,
in an empty, howling wasteland.
He surrounded them and watched over them;
He guarded them as He would guard His own eyes.
11 Like an eagle that rouses her chicks
and hovers over her young,
so He spread His wings to take them up
and carried them safely on His pinions."
(Deut. 32)

It is my thought that in the Incarnation, Christ began this possibility of salvation when He assumed our humanity to Himself.

When almost the whole of the Christian world had succumbed to the heretical teachings of Arius, Athanasius fought the heresy by showing the truth of sacred Scripture as told in 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

Athanasius wrote against Arius, this:

"since the Word of God was above
all, when He offered His own temple and bodily
instrument as a substitute for the life of all, He
fulfilled in death all that was required. Naturally
also, through this union of the immortal Son of God
with our human nature, all men were clothed with
incorruption in the promise of the resurrection. For
the solidarity of mankind is such that, by virtue of
the Word's indwelling in a single human body, the
corruption which goes with death has lost its power
over all. You know how it is when some great king
enters a large city and dwells in one of its houses;
because of his dwelling in that single house, the
whole city is honored, and enemies and robbers
cease to molest it. Even so is it with the King of all;
He has come into our country and dwelt in one
body amidst the many, and in consequence the
designs of the enemy against mankind have been
foiled and the corruption of death, which formerly
held them in its power, has simply ceased to be.
For the human race would have perished utterly
had not the Lord and Savior of all, the Son of God,
come among us to put an end to death . . . "

“For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an IOTA, not a DOT will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” vs. “I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest DETAIL of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved”. (Matthew 5:18 NLT)

Wade, your last post was on: “...Traditional Trap”. Are some the same way with Bible translations? Dan Ray was a missionary in Korea. Once, Paige Patterson (president of SWBTS) asked him in an accusing tone of voice: “Do you preach from the King James?” He didn’t know what to say when Dan replied: “No, we use the Korean Bible.”

Rex Ray said...

Wade,

This is a great post but I wish you’d not said: “All the Old Testament writings...are about the Person of Jesus Christ.” Those are fighting words to me.

I’ll explain: The 1963 Baptist Faith and Message (BFM) has: “The criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted is Jesus Christ.”

To paraphrase: ‘The Bible is to be interpreted through the eyes of Jesus.’

BTW, the 2000 BFM states “The office of pastor is limited to men...” which in my book tries to make women second class Christians.

The 2000 BFM replaced the 1963 statement: “All Scripture is a testimony to Christ...” which is about what you said.

It’s true that Jesus KNEW all Scripture in the Bible, but that's a big difference from all Scripture is about Jesus.

Wade Burleson said...

I definitely like the statment “All the OT writings...are about the Person of Jesus Christ” better than what I wrote! :)

Remember, though, I wrote my post in 30 minutes. The BFM 1963 took a year to formulate!

I think that Christ is the ONLY One who can fully understand and explain sacred Scripture and we must try to read it through the lens of Christ in order to get a better understanding of it

Why?

Because He was 'the lamb Who was slain' and is the only one worthy to 'open the scrolls'

The Book of Revelation points to Christ and the One Who has the power to 'open the scrolls' and reveal to us fully their meaning

This reminds me of, a little bit, the assassination of JFK. We just don't want to believe it was so stupidly simple. It just has to be more complicated than what they said, right?

Hebrews 8 says : "7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another." ... and then:

"13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear."

We know the truth and it shall make us free .. but most seem to interpret that as freedom from hell. But that's a promise for dead Christians. My life has been immeasurably improved since the "freedom thing" took full effect. And you're the only one I've seen really emphasizing that.

It's a lot like a SS friend of mine said when someone asked him if eternal security means he can sin as much as he wants. He said "Yes ... but I don't want to sin". As they told me in counselors' training for a Bill Glass Crusade about 50 years ago: If someone wants you to pray about a particular sin, don't do it. Preay about their relationship with Jesus. A half century later, those words boom loud and clear.

Rex Ray said...

Bob,

On the assassination of JFK, you said, “...It just has to be more complicated than what they said, right?”

RIGHT! It’s a lot more complicated than Oswald being the loan killer as Warn Commission (appointed by the mastermind of the killing) claimed.

Why was the only available copy of the oath to be used when LBJ was sworn in on the airport runway in his pocket?

Why did Mrs. Kennedy, dressed in blood soaked cloths say she regretted washing blood from her face and hands because she wanted to show what they had done to Jack?

Why was the parade route changed off Main St. to go by the ‘shooting gallery’ (East window, West window, grassy noel, and fence) and then back on Main St.?

In the parade why was LBJ’s car farther behind JFK’s than normal?

Why was LBJ on the floorboard 30 seconds before the first shot was fired?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeleine_Duncan_Brown

Madeleine Duncan Brown (July 5, 1925 – June 22, 2002) was an American woman who claimed to be a longtime mistress of United States President Lyndon B. Johnson. In addition to claiming that a son was born out of that relationship, Brown also implicated LBJ in conspiracy to assassination of JFK.

Bob, if you want more proof go to Google and type “James Files”. He said he used a mercury bullet. Since mercury never goes away, if traces of it were found by an autopsy today, it would prove a conspiracy since a led bullet was found in JFK’s back.

Jesus was so amazing in His teachings (I mean, being God and all) and I loved how He simplified things so even I can get it. In Matthew 7:12 He explained how to fulfill all the Law and Prophets' teachings when He said, "However you want people to treat you, so treat them; for this is The Law and The Prophets".

I'll bet James could hardly believe his eyes when after Calvary:

"Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. (1 Corinthians 15:7)

"

Rex Ray said...

Bob,

Another shot why LBJ was the Mastermind of JFK’s murder that’s shown in the life of Malcolm E. Wallace. He was once in the Marines and met LBJ while teaching at the University of Texas. He went to work for Senator LBJ in Washington.

LBJ believed he was being blackmailed how he stole the election. Wanting the guy dead, LBJ told Wallace he was sleeping with his wife. Wallace rushed to Austin, Texas and shot the guy. A witness gave his license plate number to the police. Wallace was arrested within minutes and charged with first degree murder. The jury found him guilty, but the judge (friend of LBJ) overruled the jury and gave him five years imprisonment, suspended.

Wallace was made head of purchasing for LTV in Dallas. (I retired from this company.) Thereafter he ‘removed’ anyone that LBJ requested. His favorite method was rerouting the car’s exhaust so the victim died. (Later, he died the same way after bragging how many he had killed and wanted more money.)

When JFK was killed, there were unknown fingerprints found on a box in the ‘sniper’s window’. Years later they were proven to be his.

Wade,

A year vs. 30 minutes: You are a funny man. I meant to write this sooner but got sidetracked. :)

History:
In 1962 the SBC adopted the motion that presidents of State Conventions to present a new BFM to be voted on in 1963. This large committee welcomed anyone to be of service. Churches and their messengers had time to study the proposed change before the SBC met.

In 2000, Paige Patterson, president of the SBC, handpicked 15 people to write the 2000 BFM. They met behind closed doors. They said, “We’re not allowed to tell what we’ve written but you will like it.” Thus all churches and their representatives were in the dark when Patterson pushed the 2000 BFM to be adopted.

Besides excluding women from being pastors (many women in China and Japan are pastors) the 2000 BFM states: “a WIFE IS TO SUBMIT HERSELF GRACIOUSLY TO THE SERVANT LEADERSHIP OF HER HUSBAND and TO RESPECT HER HUSBAND AND TO SERVE AS HIS HELPER IN MANAGING THE HOUSEHOLD AND NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION."

All States have one Southern Baptist Convention except Texas and Virginia which now have two. The Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) was started in 1886.

It supports the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message (BFM) which states: “In no case has it sought to delete from or to add to the basic contents of the 1925 Statement.” (This was deleted from the 2000 BFM)

Eventually, the ‘powers that be’ made everyone sign the 2000 BFM that they had control over. I remember you had to sign but you signed with some word that meant ‘except’ or something.

Bob,

I wrote this email to Bill O’Rilley when he was on a ‘high horse’ on TV how Oswald killed JFK. Needless to say he did not reply, but he stopped talking about Oswald.

To Bill O’Rilley
From Rex Ray
December 3, 2015.
These 15 facts in James Tague book with page numbers as (#) and my comments in [ ] will prove ‘conspiracy’.

1. Photograph of Texas Department of Public Safety showed two spent rounds and one live round in the ‘sniper’s nest’. (#279) [“live” means the rifle firing pin had not made a dent in the round; only the lead and powder had been removed.]

2. [No one knew the exact time JFK would pass the School Book Depository.] Four employees saw Oswald reading a newspaper on the first floor at 11:50. (#47)

3. Oswald asked James Jarman JR. why people were gathering outside. Jarman answered, and Oswald said, “Oh, I see.” (#46)

4. Carolyn Arnold saw Oswald eating in the lunchroom on the second floor at 12:15. (#47) [First shot fired at 12:30]

5. Marrion L. Baker, policeman, pulled a gun on Oswald in the lunchroom 75 seconds after the first shot was fired. Oswald appeared normal, calm, and collected. Afterwards, Oswald bought a soda from a soft-drink-machine. (#44)

6. Vickie Adams and Sandra Styles were watching through a window on the 4th floor as shots were fired. They immediately went down the creaky wooden stairs in three inch high heels and outside without seeing anyone. They would have taken one of the two elevators but the electricity was off. (#214)

7. If Oswald had shot Kennedy from the 6th floor, he would have had to hide his rifle on the 5th floor, and be in the lunchroom in 75 seconds without being out of breath. Also, since the women had a head start of two floors, he would have the impossible task of running past them without being seen. (#217)

8. After drinking the soda, Oswald casually walked out of the front door and caught a bus. After the bus got stalled in traffic, he got a taxi but not before waiting for the bus driver to give him a transfer that was stamped 12:40 which was on him when he was arrested.) (#95) [Would a killer on the run wait for a transfer?]

9. Attorney General of Texas, Waggoner Carr, said Oswald was hired by the FBI in September 1962 as an informant with a salary of $200 a month. (#179)

10. Oswald had been placed at the Texas School Book Depository building (October 15, 1963…five weeks before the assassination. (#205)

11. E. Howard Hunt was a former CIA agent who served 33 months in prison for Watergate. Oswald believed he was in charge and wrote a letter two weeks before the assassination:
“Dear Mr. Hunt, I would like information concluding my position. I am asking only for information. I am suggesting that we discuss the matter fully before any steps are taken by me or anyone else. Thank You, Lee Harvey Oswald.”

[Oswald should have known Paul Newman’s statement: “If you're playing poker and look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.”]

12. “It is evident to me [Tague] that the taxi ride to Oak Cliff [to his apartment] gave Oswald a moment to think, and he panicked knowing he was a patsy. (#97) TV quoted him saying: “I’m a patsy.”

13. Oswald rushed in and out of his room so fast, his landlady, Earlene Roberts said, “My, you’re sure in a hurry.” (#95) [Probably got his pistol.]

14. “A theater cashier called police and reported a suspicious wild-looking man had entered the Texas Theater on West Jefferson Street.” (#96) [In the lunchroom, Oswald faced a policeman’s gun and stayed clam because he hadn’t done anything wrong, but now fear had him looking for someplace to hide.]

15. Oswald was charged for killing Officer Tippit, but the bullets in Tippit could not be matched to Oswald’s gun. (#97)

Bob,

I think this will be all the info I’ll write from James Tague’s book, “LBJ and the Kennedy Killing” copyright 2013. A stray bullet injured his face when JFK was killed.

He was from Bonham, TX and my friend. I believe he was ‘given’ cancer to stop his popularity. I attended his funeral three months after his book was published.

“Lawrence Loy Factor [Chickasaw Indian] admitted he was on the sixth floor in the West window.” (page # 415) [I believe he didn’t want to kill anyone, and it was his bullet that hit the street curb and knocked concrete into Tague’s face.]

“Factor and his family from Oklahoma went to Bonham, Texas [my hometown] hoping to see President Kennedy when he attended the funeral of Sam Rayburn on November 18, 1961.

While there he got to talking to Wallace [hit man for LBJ]. Factor impressed Wallace by talking of his marksmanship with a rifle. Wallace gave him $20 to buy something for his kids. He wrote down Factor’s address and said he might have a job for him in the future.

Over a year later Wallace had Factor demonstrate his shooting ability. Wallace told Factor he had some work for him in about a year that would pay $10,000. Factor didn’t know what the work was but accepted $2,000 as a down payment.

To this poor Indian it was like a million dollars. When he found out what the job was he said he was in too deep to back out and feared for his life.” (#416-417)
